The Elms School made a successful application to Sport England and the Arts Council to fund a stand-alone sports and arts facility for both school and local community. Boden Associates was chosen to design the scheme within an existing 1930s building.
Our task was to maximise the potential of an awkward space, albeit one which was ideally placed to serve both school and local community. Key issues were accessibility for all, linking the external and internal facilities and creating a secure place for people to use during evenings and weekends.
We linked a new external multi-use games area with internal changing facilities. A new lift was installed; the layout improved to enhance accessibility and a new music and seminar room was included. What was once an under-used space became an accessible facility that will benefit both pupils and public for years to come.
