Altons Cigar Factory

Background and Brief
This 18th-century cigar factory, Victorian shop and neighboring townhouses were to be developed into city centre apartments and linked with the new Canning Circus building designed by Boden Associates on the adjacent site. The factory and shop, both grade II-listed, had been derelict for a long time. Whole sections of floor were missing, supporting walls were badly damaged and the roof had collapsed in places.

The buildings were unsafe to survey, presenting a considerable challenge in the planning stages of the project. That aside, a key requirement of the project was to respect the buildings’ listed status and retain many aspects of the original structure.

Our design emphasises the contrasts between old and new. Clean, modern internal walls sit calmly alongside exposed original brickwork; new spaces are carved out from the old and attention is drawn to attractive existing features.

The regeneration of these three forgotten buildings into contemporary living spaces has provided desirable and much-needed housing in a developing area of Nottingham. Our rigorous planning and sensitive design breathed new life into buildings that are an important part of Nottingham’s architectural heritage.
