The family bought a lovely barn conversion which consisted of a fabulous main house in Wisbech, Cambridgeshire with the benefit of an attached annex. The plan was to completely strip out the annex to provide an accessible wing for their daughter who has CP with the potential for carer’s in the future. The annex was split over two levels, so the design solution was to form a new wide corridor and ramp linking a multifunctional living room and sensory/activity space, with a central kitchenette and new entrance which in turn led to a remodelled accessible bedroom and bathroom.
The joy of the project lay in the use of angled mirrors to see around the corners of the corridors, to visually link the existing barn and the remodelled annex wing as well as to provide additional ground floor bedroom space for the family or carers.
We undertook some remodelling in the house to provide ramps to all changes in levels in the existing barn as well as completely remodelling the courtyard for easy access and to provide a level linked access to the rear garden and the result is a highly personalised and future proofed accessible house that has flowing spaces.
